Things to Do Near Your Getaway Outpost
I feel like Getaway did a great job at providing many amenities, making good use of the space, and incorporating elements into the cabin that make it accessible for all types of travelers and explorers. Getaway just asks that you stay with your dog at all times, keep them on a leash when outdoors, and always clean up after them. Also, it’s not like there is much moving room to begin with to be having a lot of people in there, to be honest. Two people per cabin is the sweet spot, in my opinion to, where everyone will feel comfortable.
Where is Getaway House Located?
Nestled in Navasota, Texas — about an hour from Houston in the Brazos Valley— the new 142-acre Outpost boasts 34 two-person cabins featuring a queen bed, and 12 four-person cabins with queen bunks. Our cozy, tiny cabins are designed to give you the perfect space to recharge. Our cabins have everything you need and nothing you don’t, so you don’t have to think too hard about what you need for your stay. My Review of The Getaway House: A Tiny Cabin For Urban Dwellers
We planned to get into the camping spirit with some s’mores later that night, but there was, unfortunately, a huge thunderstorm, so that sadly went out the window. Outside of our cabin, there was a fire pit and grill grate in case we wanted to start a campfire for any cooking desires. Each cabin has a driveway to the side of the Getaway cabin that is big enough to fit two compact cars. I noticed that prices are $127/night during the summer, but in the fall, they lower to $112/night on weekdays, so that is something to factor in. Getaway House provides you with a lot of things but these are some things I would recommend bringing. The Dumb Texan is 155+ grams of beef – that’s about nine ounces with a fried sunny-side-up egg on top.
Location Outpost & Pricing
So to me, The Getaway House was a nice little happy medium with just the right amount of amenities provided, while still remaining authentically rustic and detached. But, while tiny homes and glamping are incredibly trendy and popular, they aren’t for everyone. In both of my experiences staying in a Getaway House – in two different parts of the country – I felt incredibly safe. The Getaway House was founded in 2015 with the goal of encouraging people to take a break from their busy city lives and unplug while reconnecting with nature. Hours stretch into days which stretch into weeks which stretch into months and months on end until the next thing you know, you’ve forgotten the last time you allowed yourself to take a break. Not a scheduled brunch or a weekend binge of Netflix’s latest series.
Cabin prices vary by location, day of the week, and seasonality, but expect rates to generally fall between ~$129-$299/night. Scroll down for a full list of what you’ll find in each cabin! If you need anything during your stay, reinforcements are just a text or call away. That means you have to brush your teeth over the kitchen sink and use a rinky-dink “shaving mirror” located in the cabinet if you need a mirror for any reason. Despite being so close to Houston, I really felt like I left Houston. The Getaway House cabins were truly in the middle of the forest.

However, I got an introductory rate so I paid much less than they are charging now. I set up this super easy packable hammock and it was bliss. There is something blissfully relaxing about hanging under the trees with nowhere to go and nothing to do.
Here, your only obligation should be to completely disconnect and enjoy. And, since we’re all SO glued to our devices, each cabin comes with a Cellphone Lockbox, encouraging guests to stow their tech away and be present. The current price is what you could pay for a pretty nice hotel in a major city! I see prices upwards of, and over, $200 and I would never pay $200 a night (plus dog fees) to camp. Computerized lockboxes are included in Getaway cabins, making them entirely safe.
And, while the Getaway House cabins are designed to feel remote, each Outpost has onsite (though pretty well hidden) staff at your service. If you need anything during your stay, from toiletries to bug proofing to recommendations, you can easily text (if you have cell signal) or call (using the phone provided in your cabin) for assistance. Well, you get a tiny cabin to yourself, in near-total privacy and seclusion from anyone else. Each of the cabins are spread 50 – 150 feet apart from one another, scattered amongst wooded areas spanning acres and acres. The cabins are self-catering, allowing you to check yourself in and out via pin code, and they come with a good amount of essential necessities (like toilet paper, towels, and cooking supplies. Because of the secluded nature of our outposts, cell phone service may be a little spottier than normal.
Life can feel so exciting and purposeful when your calendar is stacked, inbox is buzzing, and notifications are flying at you left and right. I was able to walk with my dog, read under the trees, take naps in front of the big window, and relax in front of the fire. Getaway will have information posted online for available activities near to your specific outpost. For the Houston outpost, nearly everything was 30+ minutes away.
It was the Dumb Texan burger at The Bird, a few blocks off the notorious Reeperbahn in the St. Pauli district of Hamburg. This is where a wild night of partying turns into hard day drinking. A few minutes’ walk away is the seediest sex-for-sale district in Europe. Hamburg’s walled-off prostitution zone makes Amsterdam’s red light district look like a Junior Miss Pageant. We didn't bring our dog this time, but they do provide a large outdoor leash for your pup.
