In 1998, crew members reportedly used the ship in a drug smuggling operation in the Mediterranean. Its final voyage as Pacific Princess was in 2002, when Princess replaced the vessel in the fleet with the former Renaissance Cruises' R Three, which still holds the name Pacific Princess. Unlike ocean liners, expedition cruises are small and have flexible schedules that adapt to the weather and wildlife sightings. These cruises are not for those seeking all-night dancing, drinks by the pool and multiple dining options. Rather, expedition cruises cater to those seeking immersive nature experiences and a certain degree of adventure.
After dancing the night away, adults can spend the day relaxing at The Sanctuary, while families will surely appreciate the dedicated spaces for kids, tweens, and teens. Prepare to receive the royal treatment (pun intended) aboard the 3,560-passenger Royal Princess. Don’t miss the adults-only Solarium, the Rooftop Garden, the aforementioned Eden, or the Magic Carpet, which offers the best views at sea. Royal Caribbean has long been famous for its vessels, which are marvels of ship-building engineering. Much of the fleet has held top size rankings among modern cruise ships, but Oasis of the Seas ushered in a new era of size, capacity, entertainment and design, making it one of the most memorable vessels sailing the world's oceans today.
So perhaps it makes sense that it has one of the most extensive children's programs at sea. The line has formal children's programming and activities for children as young as 2 years old through the age of 17. Passengers can learn to cook everything from Carnival's classic warm chocolate melting cake to its popular saffron risotto during one- to two-hour classes that cost $30 to $59 per person.
A good way to begin is to create your packing list to ensure you don't leave something important behind. In addition to items you should pack for every cruise, you'll want to bring along a few Carnival-specific must-haves. Everyone who boards a cruise ship is given some kind of key to access their room.
Beach Lanyards
Also, consider packing a couple of plug adapters for European-style outlets. If you're like our family and pack every conceivable electronic device when you cruise, the adapters will help you make the most of any outlets that would otherwise go unused. If you take prescription medication, bring enough for the length of your sailing and a few extra days, just in case your trip is extended for any reason. I also recommend creating a personalized first-aid kit that contains your preferred pain relievers, antacids, bandages and anti-nausea medicine or ginger candy (if you're prone to motion sickness). Carnival's onboard shops do sell common over-the-counter medicines you might need during your cruise, but they'll cost you a lot more than they do at your local pharmacy.
Basic solid wrist strap lanyards
Where you won't find Carnival ships, notably, is in Asia, South America or, for the most part, Europe. Unlike other big cruise brands such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises, Carnival doesn't spread its vessels around the world to draw a fly-in crowd. Aimed squarely at Americans, its trips are all about cruising close to home at a reasonable price. This power strip is one of the few allowed by Carnival Cruise Lines. A standard suge protector will get you busted in security.
You don’t get a free lanyard when you cruise with Carnival, but you can buy them from the gift shop on the cruise. Carnival recommends bringing a lanyard of your own, if you have one, to keep your Sail & Sign card safe. Unless you have super-organised kids, you’ll know they can often lose things easily. But kids do seem to have a knack for making important things vanish at inopportune times. If you’re someone who likes to have everything tucked away in a pocket, then you may not need a lanyard.
Members earn one point for every night they sail on one of the line's ships. Reaching the third tier, Gold, requires 25 points. Most vessels have standard North American-style, 110-volt outlets in rooms, as well as European-style, 220-volt outlets.
To use them, you'll need to punch holes in your cards to take advantage of the small nylon thread loops. Getting a replacement didn’t cost any money, fortunately (some cruise lines charge a fee), but it did cost over an hour of precious cruise time. The customer service line was about 12 people deep.
Onboard Activities
BlueIguana is a Chipotle-style restaurant, with yummy made-to-order burritos and tacos. Created in partnership with Food Network's Guy Fieri, Guy's Burger Joint offers burgers that beat anything you'll find around the pool on other mass-market ships and even most luxury vessels. You'll find relatively few suites on Carnival ships. Each of the vessels in Carnival's recent Vista Class series, for instance, offers fewer than 75 suites. Each of the line's earlier Conquest Class ships has around 50 suites. The oldest Fantasy Class vessels have 28 suites and 26 junior suites.
We'll put some cash in these and hand them out to our favorite staff members. You'd be surprised how much better your service will get as an added bonus. The room has a couple light switches that invoke the power of the sun to cast a blinding, supernova onto anyone nearby. When entering, it will detect motion and offer a soft, welcoming illumination to relieve the last few all you can drinks. Choose a stateroom that will have the sunrise when you’re headed out to sea, and the sunset when you’re returning home. This can change depending on your route, but for us, it was the port side.
Since cruising is a cash free environment, your cruise card serves not only as a key card for your cabin, but as a charge card as well. A cruise lanyard is a convenient way to make sure you always have this with you. This simple cruise card holder lanyard has a waterproof sealed pouch and solid clasp, perfect if you want the most affordable option. It’s not uncommon for cruise passengers to lose or misplace their key cards, often at the worst times. For example, if you’re trying to get into a show and need your card scanned, you must have it.
Cruise Lanyards are a convenience, but they are not mandatory for cruise passengers. Keep in mind that you’ll be using your cruise card several times a day. This Ocean Medallion phone card holder is perfect for those who prefer to keep their cards, cash and medallion on their phone. It adheres to your phone or phone case, and easily comes off at the end of the cruise. This cruise lanyard is great for Carnival cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and all other cruise lines that require guests to carry their cruise card.
It's not uncommon to find Carnival voyages to the Caribbean, Bahamas or Mexico starting well under $100 per person, per night including all taxes and fees — at least in the offseason. In other words, if you are sailing seven-night cruises, you will be Gold level on your fourth sailing, as you will be passing the 25-day mark on that sailing. All vessels operate on a "cashless system," with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account. You'll receive a Sail & Sign card that you can use to make charges.
Carnival Panorama also houses Carnival's first cooking classroom. In general, the production shows aren't nearly as sophisticated — or as long — as what you'll find on Royal Caribbean or Norwegian ships. Every Carnival ship has one big theater where you'll often find flashy, fast-paced production shows that string together a medley of loosely related tunes. Designed to be quick and digestible, they typically last around 30 minutes and have relatively small casts (just eight on some ships). Carnival draws a lively, outgoing crowd looking to be part of the action. The overarching idea for Carnival's ship deployments is that a large percentage of the U.S. population can reach one of the line's ships by car, saving the cost of flights.
There's now at least one waterslide on all but one ship in the Carnival fleet (Carnival Luminosa) — something no other line can say. When it comes to raucous, though, nothing on Carnival ships quite compares to the frequent karaoke nights on board. Sometimes held in a secondary lounge or a shipboard pub, karaoke on Carnival draws a big crowd. Passengers come prepared with rehearsed songs and sometimes even their own guitars. The quality of the food (and drink) on Carnival ships always surprises us, given the budget pricing of the brand.
The fun continues when you reach your port — there’s a huge variety of shore excursions to choose from. Our ships sail to stunning destinations — see just where on the map we go. Carnival ships are all about fun, in a lively, let's-not-take-this-too-seriously sort of way. As you might expect, pricing for ships will generally be lower during offseason periods such as September, October and parts of November.
The 6400-passenger ship Symphony OTS comprises 7 neighborhoods - Royal Promenade, Central Park, Boardwalk, Entertainment Zone, Sports Zone, Youth Center complex, Wellness complex. Symphony is currently the world's largest passenger ship by GT tonnage (228,100 tons), which is 1000+ GT-tons larger than the sistership Harmony OTS. It also has 28 more staterooms, new for RCI "Family Suite" (duplex apartment on 2 decks), redesigned Boardwalk area. In addition to onboard attractions like the Ultimate Abyss and laser tag, Symphony of the Seas also delivers some of the best entertainment in the cruising industry. Every show onboard is a hit, but you definitely can’t miss the dazzling performances at the AquaTheater. This open-air venue sets the stage for shows that blend dance, synchronized swimming, impressive aerial feats and captivating high-diving stunts by world-class performers.

They expect Symphony to be, by weight, the most energy-efficient ship at sea (a claim currently held by Harmony). “We were able to improve the ship’s energy efficiency by 20 per cent with about 100 different initiatives. The feature will debut on Symphony of the Seas and be rolled out across the entire Royal fleet. On the main stage, huge 4K screens on robotic arms delivered a dance performance (the show, something of a novelty gimmick, is featured on Quantum-class ships), before Fain made his presentation. The Symphony of the Seas can hold 5,518 based on double occupancy (two people per room) and more when you take into account 3rd and 4th passengers. When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, the Symphony of the Seas has a space ratio of 41. Depending on the ship, this number can range from 30 to 52 (with a bigger number meaning more space per person) so this ship's space-to-person ratio is about average. The Symphony of the Seas uses a neighborhood layout to break up large crowds across the ship, often making it feel less crowded. In fact, I found trying to squeeze everything in to be a bit overwhelming (totally worth it, though!). It was Fain who realised that the cruise industry’s image problem was in fact an opportunity. Convince sceptical land-lovers that cruise ships aren’t outdated, boring and, as an industry joke put it, full of “the newlywed and the nearly dead”, and Royal Caribbean could lock up customers for life. They are my favorite class of ship, so I was hoping to see if Symphony of the Seas lived up to my expectations.
The Symphony of the Seas is one of six Oasis-class ships currently sailing with Royal Caribbean. Oasis-class ships are the second largest class of cruise ships in the world. Their split-superstructure design creates unique outdoor spaces in the middle of the ship called Central Park and the Boardwalk. This class of ships also introduced the "neighborhood" concept, which groups venues into different themed zones to help improve people flow. The Symphony of the Seas is very similar to its sister-ships; Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas, although each ship may have some differences.

But close quarters enable outbreaks, so sanitation regulations at sea are stringent. As far as onboard attractions, entertainment, and family-friendly activities go, Symphony of the Seas offers something for every vacationer. We’ve covered ten of the top things to do on this record-breaking Oasis Class cruise ship, but once you step aboard you’ll find we’ve only scratched the surface of ways you can fill every sea day. Symphony of the Seas – which, on its maiden voyage from Barcelona in March 2018 became the largest passenger ship ever built – is about five times the size of the Titanic.
